Calcutta, India

Calcutta has maintained the old type of Rickshaws, where travelers are seated and the rickshaw wala pulls the cart and runs instead of biking. The culture of the rickshaw wala is fascinating - it is brutal work for poverty wage. Many of the workers live on the streets. This young rickshaw wala was no different - living on streets one has to perform the morning rituals of getting ready in the morning on the street. He was bathing underneath this faucet and I kneeled right next to him to get the right perspective. These workers were having a ton of fun bathing together in the streets - even with a hard life, there is a happiness that surrounds them and I try to capture that when I travel India. I submitted this image to the travel photographer of the year in 2011 and it received a commendation in the work, rest, and play category.
